Dealing with Water Damage in Your Oxnard Carpets

Homeownership, unfortunately, is often full of unpredictable challenges, such as a bathtub overflowing and flooding your carpeted hallway. Even if you have a carpet shampooer to remove excess water, you may need professional assistance to mitigate any secondary damage like carpet delamination in the form of backings buckling or rippling or potential mold colony growth.

Dealing with water damage after an unfortunate overflow in your Oxnard home may be seriously inconvenient, but it does not mean that your carpet is completely destroyed. With proper extraction, drying, and cleaning, SERVPRO technicians most likely can restore your carpet to preloss condition. Drying carpet quickly helps to prevent excess moisture from seeping into the backing, potentially requiring removal or even replacement of the carpet.

When the carpet becomes wet, it is not just the carpet visible to you that incurs damage. There are also the primary and secondary backings to consider since they play an essential role in the life and durability of the carpet. The primary backing material consists of woven or spun-bonded material that has carpet tufts woven or needle-punched into it, typically made of synthetic or jute materials.

The secondary backing is the layer at the backside of the carpet, which is attached with latex adhesive, providing strength, allowing the carpet to keep its shape after installation. The secondary backing may be jute or synthetic material like polypropylene.

It is important to note that 99% of the carpet made today is out of synthetic material, rather than the burlap-like jute. However, older carpet in homes and some area rugs still have jute, which tends to shrink when wet making it imperative to dry the carpet quickly after exposure to water. Polypropylene, on the other hand, does not absorb as much water and does not shrink; however, it may be difficult to stretch during re-installation.

After water damage, it is also crucial to inspect, replacing, if necessary, the coated latex adhesive material that anchors tufts into the carpet's primary backing to hold primary and secondary backing together when restoring carpets. Latex breaks down quickly due to age, heat, and heavy traffic potentially causing delamination, meaning that primary and secondary backings loosen, and the carpet loses its shape.

SERVPRO water damage experts understand carpet and how to remove excess moisture best while preserving the appearance of your carpet. Our goal is to make it "Like it never even happened."
